Okay, so here's the story...
Equity was AI'd on July 2, 2006 with the premium Mohler seed. A couple of weeks later she went into what we believed was a false heat. We believed this because it wasn't a very strong heat. She only showed outward signs of heat with a little bit of discharge.
During that same time, however, a neighborhood boy decided it wasn't too hot to go fishing (even though we were in the middle of a heat wave and drought!). Well, it seems as though the hot sun baked the kid's brains a bit and he forgot to reconnect the electric fence that would have prevented Equity from meandering over into the pasture which served to restrain the ranch's prized Simmental bull named Solomon.
She was exposed to this bull for probably less than six hours and when she was discovered in Solomon's pasture she was on one side of the acreage, while he was on the other. No, neither were smoking a cigarette! However, there was always the possibility that her heat was not false and that he might have jumped (cowboy term for impregnate) her.
Our AI specialist Brandi palped her fifty days later, she confirmed that there was a fetus and she recommended that a sonogram be taken in order to determine whether it was a fifty day fetus (a Mohler calf) or a thirty day fetus (a Solomon calf).
I decided at that point that a sonogram was not necessary. If it was a Solomon calf I wasn't going to give Equity "the shot" and start all over. The important thing to me was that she was pregnant. I decided to take my chances and let nature and providence take its course.
The due date for a Mohler, Hereford, calf was April 16, 2007. The due date for a Solomon, Simmental, calf is May 6, 2007. Since today's date is May 2, 2007 and Equity still hasn't calved...well, you do the math!
Needless to say, Equity apparently had a "roll in the hay" with this Solomon bull.
But, "hay," that's okay. If it (the calf) is healthy, i.e., doesn't have two heads, five legs, or whatever, it will be a fine cross between a registered Simmental and a registered Hereford.
Now, the fun begins! What name do you give a cross between a Solomon (the Simmental) and an Equity (the Hereford)?
My suggestions are:
If it's a bull calf, his name should probably be: "St. Sirloin," or "St. Burger."
If it's a heifer calf, her name should probably be: "Solemnity" (somewhat of a cross between the names Solomon and Equity). Or maybe we call her: "A Mid-Summer's night...", never mind.
